Double Beds & Frames
Our double beds offer two people a comfortable 135 x 190cm space to sleep, without taking up as much room as bigger frames. The 4ft 6 size is a great choice for main bedrooms or guest rooms where you want a roomy bed without making the space feel crowded.
You can pick from low-profile or panelled double bed frames, soft upholstered designs, wooden frames in oak or pine, and ottoman beds that use the space under the mattress for storage. Sleigh, rattan, and four-poster beds add extra style if you want the bed to be the focal point.
Pair your frame with a double mattress, or compare small double beds and king size beds if you’re weighing up floor space against extra sleeping room. UK mainland delivery and returns are free, with finance available on qualifying orders.

Why Choose a Standard Double Bed?
A standard double bed frame measures 135 x 190cm, or 4ft 6 x 6ft 3, giving two people a comfortable shared sleeping space and one sleeper plenty of room to spread out.
Why Choose a Standard Double Bed?
A standard double bed frame measures 135 x 190cm, or 4ft 6 x 6ft 3, giving two people a comfortable shared sleeping space and one sleeper plenty of room to spread out.
Compared with a small double bed, you gain an extra 15cm of width, which is especially useful when two people are sharing the bed regularly. A king size bed adds another 15cm of width and 10cm of length, so Double sits neatly between the two.
For many bedrooms, that makes a double an easy size to live with day to day. There is still generous room for sleeping, while leaving space for bedside tables, a chest of drawers, wardrobes or a dressing table. A double bed also works well in guest rooms, where you may want a full-size bed alongside useful storage rather than letting the bed dominate the room.
Double Bed Bases, Storage and Support
The double bed base affects both how the mattress is supported and how much storage you can build into the frame. Many double bed frames use slats beneath the mattress, with solid slats giving a firmer, more fixed base and sprung slats adding a little flexibility under your weight.
For extra storage, ottoman double beds lift the mattress platform to open up the space underneath. End-lift designs work well when you have clear access at the foot of the bed, while side-lift ottomans can be easier where the foot sits closer to other furniture. Because the storage runs beneath most of the mattress, it is particularly useful for duvets, spare bedding and bulkier items.
Drawer beds give you more immediate access without lifting the mattress. They work best where there is enough clear space beside the frame to pull the drawers out fully, making them useful for clothes, bedding or items you reach for more often.
Double Bed Frames for Different Bedroom Looks
Low foot-end double beds leave more of the mattress visible and keep the view across the room more open, while spindle, slatted and rattan headboards add detail without creating one solid block behind the pillows. Metal frames do something similar with slimmer rails and a more open structure.
Panelled headboards create a broader, more enclosed backdrop, while high foot ends give the bed a deeper profile from end to end. Sleigh beds add curved headboards and foot ends for a fuller shape, and four-poster designs bring extra height through the posts as well as the frame itself.
If you want your double bed frame to make more of an impact, taller headboards, sleigh shapes and four-posters give the frame greater presence. For a lighter look, lower foot ends and open headboard designs expose more of the wall and bedding around the frame.
Wooden, Upholstered and Painted Double Bed Frames
A wooden double bed frame brings more visible grain and variation into the room, with oak and pine options ranging from lighter natural tones through to warmer, waxed and more rustic finishes. Painted frames give the same timber structure a cleaner, more uniform surface, with white, grey, black and other colours available where you want the frame to feel less visually textured.
Upholstered double beds soften the look of the headboard and side rails. Smooth woven fabrics create a flatter finish, velvet adds more depth and sheen, and bouclé gives the surface a heavier, looped texture that stands out more clearly across a padded headboard.
Rattan and cane sit between the two, combining a structured frame with woven panels that introduce pattern and texture without filling the whole headboard with one solid surface.
Frequently asked questions
What mattress do I need for a double bed?
A standard UK double bed takes a 135 x 190cm mattress, equivalent to 4ft 6 x 6ft 3. Choose a double mattress in the firmness and support level you prefer, and check the individual bed specification if you are replacing a mattress for an existing frame.
What is the difference between a double bed frame and a double bed base?
The frame is the structure around the mattress, typically including the headboard, side rails and sometimes a foot end. The double bed base is the part directly supporting the mattress. Depending on the bed, this may be solid or sprung slats, a lift-up ottoman platform or another supporting surface.
Do double bed frames come with a headboard?
Most complete double bed frames include a headboard as part of the design. Options include wooden panels, spindle and slatted headboards, padded upholstery, rattan and more open metal designs. Check the product description for exactly what is included with your chosen bed.
Can I get a double bed with built-in storage?
Yes. Double beds with storage include lift-up ottoman designs and frames with drawers. Ottoman bases are useful for larger items such as spare duvets and bedding, while drawers give you quicker access to smaller items without lifting the mattress.
Do you sell oak double beds?
Yes. Our oak double beds include slatted, panelled, low-foot and sleigh designs, with finishes ranging from lighter natural oak through to warmer, waxed, aged and rustic tones. If storage is a priority, you’ll also find ottoman oak double bed options with lift-up bases, including designs with an oak finish.
Do double bed frames require assembly?
Many double beds require assembly after delivery. Depending on the design, this can include joining the side rails, attaching the headboard and foot end, fitting the slats or assembling an ottoman lifting mechanism. Assembly information is shown on the individual product page before you order.
